Syrah

Agrelo is recognised for red varieties and whilst it has been acknowledged for its high quality Malbec it has also become known as the source of some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon emanating from Argentina. Our three Clásicos wines are single varietal wines: Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. These wines are testify to their unique site of origin, our Remolinos Vineyard.

Throughout the vineyard and the winemaking our “amano” approach is just as evident here as on each of other wines. Four steps of selection including double sorting tables, small parcel winemaking, basket pressing and a meticulous attention to quality ensure that after 14 months maturation in French oak these are wines of susbtance but each, above all, shows the hallmark elegance of our Remolinos Vineyard.

2012 Vintage

2012 was an excellent vintage in Agrelo, again marked by low yields of high quality. The lower crop was mostly due to the influence of the formidable Zonda wind during flowering in November. In Agrelo, the climate saw higher than usual rainfall during the growing season and lower rainfall during the maturation of the bunches which provided excellent conditions for vintage. Syrah from Finca Decero’s 2012 vintage shows a great combination of heightened intensity in the fruit profile in balance with the structural tannins.

2011 Vintage

The most influential factor of the 2011 vintage was a cold Spring and a frost in early November which resulted in lower than average yields. The cooler weather continued throughout the summer season causing the maturation and harvest to take place a week later than usual. The coolness of the 2011 vintage left its mark on the heightened acidity and fresh elegance of the Decero Syrah of this vintage.

2010 Vintage

The spring leading up to the 2010 vintage was particularly cool which delayed veraison and resulted in lower yields of more concentrated fruit and higher acidity in the wines. Syrah was picked 4 days later than the 2008, but not so late as to maintain the elegance of the Syrah which has consistently been the expression of Remolinos Vineyard over the past vintages of this wine.

2009 Vintage

The long, warm, dry summer of 2009 provided us with the excellent vintage conditions. The cold nights, as ever common in Remolinos Vineyard, brought length and greater acidity to this wine than we have had seen in previous vintages. To safeguard the fine backbone of acidity we picked Syrah slightly earlier than usual in 2009. Consequentially, our 2009 Syrah has more depth than its 2007 counterpart and livelier acidity with some blackberry and some spice / clove and meaty notes adding greater complexity.

2007 Vintage

Vintage 2007 was excellent in Remolinos Vineyard. The daytime temperatures of the growing season were warmer than usual whilst the nights were colder brining good acid / sugar balance and greater color and phenol content in the grapes. Humidity was slightly higher but the whirlwinds - ‘Remolinos’ kept the grapes healthy and dry. The quality of grapes from the 2007 vintage was extremely high; excellent balance, exceptional aromatics and concentration in the wines.

2006 Vintage

2006 was an excellent vintage in Agrelo. A cool winter with plenty of snow falling in the Andes was followed by a warm spring resulting in excellent and even fruit set. Summer was characterised by warm days and slightly cooler than usual nights – excellent ripening conditions. Finally, little rainfall from late February to the end of harvest led to an outstanding vintage.
