Malbec

Agrelo is recognised for red varieties and whilst it has been acknowledged for its high quality Malbec it has also become known as the source of some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon emanating from Argentina. Our three Clásicos wines are single varietal wines: Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. These wines are testify to their unique site of origin, our Remolinos Vineyard.

Throughout the vineyard and the winemaking our “amano” approach is just as evident here as on each of other wines. Four steps of selection including double sorting tables, small parcel winemaking, basket pressing and a meticulous attention to quality ensure that after 14 months maturation in French oak these are wines of susbtance but each, above all, shows the hallmark elegance of our Remolinos Vineyard.

2015 Vintage

The 2015 vintage was characterized by a particularly warm spring and early summer which brought forward harvesting by 10-15 days. Even though there were frequent summer rains the final crop was small in quantity but high quality. These early picked grapes gave us 1g per litre higher acidity than usual and slightly lower concentration, resulting in particularly elegant wines slightly lighter in style than other vintages.

2014 Vintage

The 2014 vintage was one of the coolest in our history. After the temperatures in December and January being above average, the temperatures dropped dramatically in February which, combined with summer rain, delayed grape maturation by nearly one week, as autumn progressed the temperatures remained below average and very cool. These climatic conditions resulted in Malbec with a high level of acidity, prominent aromatics and a very elegant profile.

2013 Vintage

2013 was cooler than other recent vintages, with cool temperatures throughout the summer and fall plummeting particularly at night time. As such we decided to pick our grapes in Remolinos Vineyard between 5-7 days later than the average year in order to achieve full phenolic ripeness. These cool conditions also lead to more pronounced acidity and aromatics balancing the seductive tannins.

2012 Vintage

2012 was an excellent vintage in Agrelo, again marked by low yields of high quality. The lower crop was mostly due to the influence of the formidable Zonda wind during flowering in November. In Agrelo, the climate saw higher than usual rainfall during the growing season and lower rainfall during the maturation of the bunches which provided excellent conditions for vintage. The average temperatures were slightly higher in the peak of summer but lower in April broadening the window for picking of Malbec in optimal condition.

2011 Vintage

The most influential factor of the 2011 vintage was a cold Spring and a frost in early November which resulted in lower than average yields. The cooler weather continued throughout the summer season causing the maturation and harvest to take place over a longer period than usual. The most aromatic fruit from the vines planted on the coarser western part of the vineyard were picked in early April. The richer and slightly riper berries, which give Decero Malbec intense and pure red fruit notes and tannins, were picked in late April.

2011 Decero Malbec, Remolinos Vineyard

The signature of our Remolinos Vineyard is highlighted in the violet aromatics and red fruit flavors of Decero Malbec. The 2011 shows heightened aromatics of this cooler vintage and an elegant tannin structure derived from 14 months maturation in French oak barrels.

2010 Vintage

The spring leading up to the 2010 vintage was particularly cool which delayed veraison and resulted in lower yields of more concentrated fruit and higher acidity in the wines. Otherwise, the days were of average warmth without any peaks in temperature so even ripening occurred with good simultaneous development of fruit and sugar ripeness. 2010 Malbec shows a richer texture than other vintages due to the concentrated berries but the great structure of a harmonious season.

2009 Vintage

2009 is commonly regarded in Agrelo, and other appellations of Mendoza, as the vintage of the decade. The long, warm, dry summer provided us with the perfect picking conditions over an extensive 20 day period which enabled us to pick every parcel at just the right moment to accentuate the natural differences between Malbec from different blocks and rows in the vineyard. Characteristically some parcels showed the violet aromatics for which Remolinos Vineyard is known whilst others plunged into deep red even dark fruit flavors. The cold nights as ever common in Remolinos Vineyard brings length through acidity complementing a great depth of body in the 2009 Decero Malbec.
