Wine Pick of the Week: Malbec from Argentina can be terrific with food, especially when it has solid architecture, balance, and length – all features of this vigorous and stylish wine. Decero wines display the complexities of the Remolinos Vineyard’s quality equation of sunny days, cool nights, altitude, fresh winds, and a lengthy growing season. Perfumed nose and vivid red fruits offer the kind of restrained elegance that sets it apart from other Mendoza Malbecs. Firmly structured for a prime cut of beef – take the time to make a tangy chimichurri sauce – and bold enough for a smoky bacon cheeseburger with carmelized onions and garlic.

With interesting aromas of pine, herbs, juniper and tree bark matched against blueberry and prune, this blend of 65% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot is ripped on the palate, with fine flavors of wild berry, spice and herbs. A lively finish ultimately softens with flavors of chocolate and baked berry. Drink through 2018.

‘Restraint, elegance and good value took Decero to the top. ‘Plums, currants and spice on the nose, leading to a very clean, fresh, spicy structure with finesse. Excellent length. A blend of 65% malbec, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petit verdot and 1% tannat; aged for 20 months in new French oak: Saturated bright medium ruby. Very ripe, high-toned aromas of black raspberry and sweet mocha oak. Sweet blackberry and blackberry fruit flavors are complicated by coffee and mocha notes and given a light touch by nicely integrated ripe acidity. Finishes with brisk berry flavors and good lift. A bit withdrawn today, in need of a couple years in bottle to absorb some more of its oak.

Bright ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, kirsch, bitter chocolate, violet and spice cake. Densely packed and smooth but also lively and light on its feet thanks to harmonious acidity. Conveys a lovely restrained sweetness to its dark berry, licorice, violet and tobacco flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and sneaky length; in comparison, the estate’s cabernet sauvignon is a bit drier and more herbal on the back end.

Saturated medium ruby. Very black, youthfully medicinal aromas of cassis, bitter chocolate, licorice and menthol lifted by a violet note. Densely packed, fresh and structured, with solid saline extract to the flavors of blackberry, cassis and minerals. Boasts a sophisticated texture and an enticing sugar/acid balance. This serious dry wine finishes with substantial fine-grained tannins.

From a fabulous vintage in Agrelo look for a floral, plum jam, barnyard, spicy, black berry, vanilla nose with savoury liquorice tobacco notes. The palate is rich and dry with fine acidity and some grainy young tannin. More liquorice, black plum, pepper, blueberry, spicy, vanilla, coffee flavours flecked with poultry spice. A bit rustic but with fine concentration and intensity with youthful tannins to shed over the next 2-4 years. Roast beef anyone.

2010 Decero Mini Ediciones Petit Verdot, Remolinos Vineyard

Fragrant and not too heavy. Really rather delicate and savoury and grown up. This would make a superb varietal lesson. The merest hint of Petit Verdot greenness. Lovely stuff! Sophisticated. 14%. 17 Pts. Drink 2013-2018.

Multi-layered, complex, floral and elegant. Full flavours of bright plum, berry and spice with liquorice and a gorgeous mouthfeel that leads to a long, luxurious finish. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Tannat. Firm enough for grilled bison, but elegant enough for grilled chicken.

Aromas and flavours of cherry, blackcurrant and spice with elegant well-integrated tannins, firm structure, bright acidity and a beautiful freshness on the long, silky finish. A great food wine because of its fresh acidity. The perfect match for a nicely marbled Alberta rib-eye.

Alluring aromas of berries. Plum, earth arrd spice give way to a structured wine filled with boysenberry, plum and blackberry fruit flavours, with firm, elegant tannins. Multi-layered, ripe but not overdone, and long on the finish. Nicely focused and balanced. Grilled lamb chops would be a great match.
