92 Points: 2009 Decero Amano, Remolinos Vineyard

From a fabulous vintage in Agrelo look for a floral, plum jam, barnyard, spicy, black berry, vanilla nose with savoury liquorice tobacco notes. The palate is rich and dry with fine acidity and some grainy young tannin. More liquorice, black plum, pepper, blueberry, spicy, vanilla, coffee flavours flecked with poultry spice. A bit rustic but with fine concentration and intensity with youthful tannins to shed over the next 2-4 years. Roast beef anyone.

2010 Decero Mini Ediciones Petit Verdot, Remolinos Vineyard

Fragrant and not too heavy. Really rather delicate and savoury and grown up. This would make a superb varietal lesson. The merest hint of Petit Verdot greenness. Lovely stuff! Sophisticated. 14%. 17 Pts. Drink 2013-2018.

92 Points: 2008 Decero Amano, Remolinos Vineyard

Multi-layered, complex, floral and elegant. Full flavours of bright plum, berry and spice with liquorice and a gorgeous mouthfeel that leads to a long, luxurious finish. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Tannat. Firm enough for grilled bison, but elegant enough for grilled chicken.

91 Points: 2008 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

Aromas and flavours of cherry, blackcurrant and spice with elegant well-integrated tannins, firm structure, bright acidity and a beautiful freshness on the long, silky finish. A great food wine because of its fresh acidity. The perfect match for a nicely marbled Alberta rib-eye.

90 Points: 2010 Decero Syrah, Remolinos Vineyard

Alluring aromas of berries. Plum, earth arrd spice give way to a structured wine filled with boysenberry, plum and blackberry fruit flavours, with firm, elegant tannins. Multi-layered, ripe but not overdone, and long on the finish. Nicely focused and balanced. Grilled lamb chops would be a great match.

2010 Decero Malbec, Remolinos Vineyard

90 Points: 2010 Decero Mini Ediciones Petit Verdot, Remolinos Vineyard

The 2010 Mini Ediciones Petit Verdot is from Agrelo in Mendoza and is aged for 16 months in barriques (50% new). It has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry and bilberry fruit with hints of wild hedgerow and graphite that all take time to unfurl. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition: sappy dark cherry and blueberry fruit on the entry and a sweet, ripe blueberry-tinged finish that belies the fine structure. This is a very commendable single varietal. Drink 2013-2019.

91 Points: 2010 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon – Remolinos Vineyard is aged in new French barriques (30% new) for 14 months. It offers a refined tobacco and sous-bois scented bouquet that nods towards the Old World. The palate is medium-bodied, with dusty blackberry fruit, bold earthy tannins and a delightful, foursquare finish that you would expect to find on the Left Bank. Fortunately, there is no Left Bank price to contend with! Excellent. Drink now-2017.

90 Points: 2009 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon – Remolinos Vineyard is raised in 30% new oak. It has a very attractive bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, cedar and vanilla that is both floral and elegant. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grainy tannins. There is a tightly wound coil of blackberry fruit laced with pain grille and smoke that dovetails into an elegant but weighty finish. This is very well-crafted and deserves two years in bottle. Drink 2014-2022.

94 Points: 2009 Decero Amano, Remolinos Vineyard

12 Exciting Argentinean Wines: The 2009 Amano – Remolinos Vineyard is a blend of 60% Malbec, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Tannat aged entirely in new French oak for 20 months. The palate is very well-balanced with juicy ripe red berry fruit laced with white pepper, orange rind and a touch of marmalade. It builds nicely to a ravishing yet fresh finish that has great persistency. If you are wondering, then the answer is -yes-: the 2009 Amano justifies the price tag. Drink now-2020.

92 Points: 2009 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

Wine of the Day: This is a beautiful, very young cabernet that needs an hour in a decanter or at least 2 years in the cellar to show its best. Once opened up, it shows a harmonious nose of cassis and blackberry fruit with violets, black olive, tobacco and oak spicy complexity. It is rich and full-bodied yet elegant with the ripe fruit well balanced by soft acidity and fine tannin giving it a savoury tone. Very good to excellent length. Try with game or roast meats. Best 2014 to 2020.

91 Points: 2009 Decero Amano, Remolinos Vineyard

A blend of 60% malbec, 31% cabernet sauvignon, 6% petit verdot and 3% tannat: Bright, deep ruby. Cassis, minerals, mocha and milk chocolate on the nose, plus a whiff of exotic coconut. Suave and silky in the mouth, with lush, sweet flavors of cassis, menthol, fresh herbs and fruity dark chocolate. An impressively pliant blend, finishing broad and long, with nicely refined tannins coating the palate. Very well made, but I’d give it a year or two in the cellar before pulling the cork.

90 Points: 2009 Decero Mini Ediciones Petit Verdot, Remolinos Vineyard

Medium ruby-red. Cassis, black pepper, bitter chocolate and a hint of violet on the nose, complemented by enticing oak tones. Suave, dense and fine-grained, with good peppery energy and violet lift to the black fruit flavors. A bit denser and darker than the 2009 cabernet sauvignon reviewed in Issue 154. Perhaps a bit youthfully monolithic in its texture but the wine’s ripe, dusty tannins and good finishing snap and lift suggest it will reward aging. Nuanced, complete petit verdot.
