90 Points: 2014 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

13 Wines to Welcome Fall: The top Cabernet on this list, from Finca Decero, hails from the Agrelo sub appellation of Mendoza. The 400-acre Remolinos vineyard is situated at 3,500 feet above sea level, at the base of the Andes Mountains, where cool winds sweeping down from the mountains promote vibrant acidity in the wine.  Dense, offering chiseled flavors of dark plum, dried berry and dark chocolate. Notes of dried green herbs and spice extend on the zesty finish. Drink now through 2020. 90 Points

Gold List & Food Match Award: 2012 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

Clinching top honors, 2012 Decero Cabernet was the only wine from Argentina to be awarded the prestigious Food Match Award.

Vibrancy and real food-friendliness gave Decero not just Gold but the newly created Burger Food Match award. Hardly surprising, given the judges comments. Excellent red fruit, with a vanilla tone, this is lively and spicy, said team leader Sarah Jane Evans MW. Rich and silky with notable tannins, added an equally approving Sandro Lyhs of Oxo Tower Bar of this dense but approachable Cabernet. Equally happy being sipped solo or accompanying chargrilled fare.

Gold List: 2010 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

‘Restraint, elegance and good value took Decero to the top. ‘Plums, currants and spice on the nose, leading to a very clean, fresh, spicy structure with finesse. Excellent length. Very well made,’ said team leader, Angela Reddin, while Gabor Foth of Hakkasan Hanway Place added, ‘Amazing, a really great expression, with good varietal character, and fresh but intense cassis. It’s a great wine for someone who likes Bordeaux or New World Cabernet blends.’ Go for char-grilled steak.’  – Gold Medal

91 Points: 2008 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

Aromas and flavours of cherry, blackcurrant and spice with elegant well-integrated tannins, firm structure, bright acidity and a beautiful freshness on the long, silky finish. A great food wine because of its fresh acidity. The perfect match for a nicely marbled Alberta rib-eye.

91 Points: 2010 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon – Remolinos Vineyard is aged in new French barriques (30% new) for 14 months. It offers a refined tobacco and sous-bois scented bouquet that nods towards the Old World. The palate is medium-bodied, with dusty blackberry fruit, bold earthy tannins and a delightful, foursquare finish that you would expect to find on the Left Bank. Fortunately, there is no Left Bank price to contend with! Excellent. Drink now-2017.

90 Points: 2009 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon – Remolinos Vineyard is raised in 30% new oak. It has a very attractive bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, cedar and vanilla that is both floral and elegant. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grainy tannins. There is a tightly wound coil of blackberry fruit laced with pain grille and smoke that dovetails into an elegant but weighty finish. This is very well-crafted and deserves two years in bottle. Drink 2014-2022.

92 Points: 2009 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

Wine of the Day: This is a beautiful, very young cabernet that needs an hour in a decanter or at least 2 years in the cellar to show its best. Once opened up, it shows a harmonious nose of cassis and blackberry fruit with violets, black olive, tobacco and oak spicy complexity. It is rich and full-bodied yet elegant with the ripe fruit well balanced by soft acidity and fine tannin giving it a savoury tone. Very good to excellent length. Try with game or roast meats. Best 2014 to 2020.

2009 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

‘2009 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon displays excellent varietal character. Aromas of cedar, blackcurrants, blackberry, and violets lead to a moderately structured wine that has 1-2 years of aging potential. This savory, layered, spicy Cabernet is a very good value meant for drinking over the next 6-7 years.’
