The top of the range, the 2013 Decero Amano Remolinos Vineyard is superb in a fresh vintage like 2013. This time the blend was 65% Malbec, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Tannat. The élevage might sound a bit brutal, with 20-22 months in brand new oak barrels, but sometimes longer is better once you have used new barrels and although it’s slightly oaky and smoky, all the violets and cherries are also there, and I’m sure it’ will develop into a nice bottle of Agrelo. The palate reveals sophisticated tannins and elegant balance, with good freshness and a remarkable finish. Patience should be rewarded. 94 Points

The 2011 Decero Amano Remolinos Vineyard (A mano means by hand, the way all operations for this wine are performed) is a well-oaked, modern and clean blend of 64% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Tannat that smells of the finest barrels money can buy and pristine ripe fruit. The nose offers a showy mixture of red and black berries with hints of violets and something mineral. The palate feels very polished, the signature of the house, with ultra-refined tannins showing superb winemaking and great balance of all components. Lively acidity also provides very good freshness. Only the very best fruits can take 20-22 months in brand new barrels as is the case here. This will live long in bottle. 95 Points

Comparisons can be hideous, but in a close look at different vintages together shows the differences and how the wines show (or not) the character of the vintage. The 2012 Decero Amano Remolinos Vineyard has a slightly different blend to the 2011, and here it is 57% Malbec, 39% Cabernet, Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, slightly higher in Cabernet and without the pinch of Tannat found in other vintages. 2012 was riper and it shows with darker fruit and more evident oak (it’s also one year younger) where toasty aromas and flavors are more noticeable. Also, the ripe berries and the fresher, red fruit has turned into plums rather than cherries. Even though, it’s a superb example of a classical Mendoza blend with no edges and very good balance. It clearly shows the place and the vintage on the label, as it should be. 93 Points.

Pretty aromas of dark fruits and violets with hints of flower petal. Full body, firm tannins and a fruity finish. The fresh wood comes out in the aftertaste but it shows plenty of fruit and structure in the end. Mostly Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon with a hint of Petit Verdot. Drink in 2016.

The 2010 Amano Remolinos Vineyard is from Agrelo a cooler area in the Lujan de Cuyo district of Mendoza, very ripe but seems to keep the freshness with good acidity and tension. It is a powerful wine with a base of Malbec blended with other varieties, which is dark-colored and feels very smoky, still marked by the oak, with a nice core of blueberries, blackberries, red fruit and spices, peat, graphite, but all these aromas should be absorbed into the wine which has lively acidity, abundant, fine-grained tannins, and is balanced with good acidity. It could be drunk now, but seeing how older vintages have evolved, I’d give it a couple of years. This is pure silk, with a kind of Audrey Hepburn perfection. A superb effort. Drink 2015-2022. 94 Points

With interesting aromas of pine, herbs, juniper and tree bark matched against blueberry and prune, this blend of 65% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot is ripped on the palate, with fine flavors of wild berry, spice and herbs. A lively finish ultimately softens with flavors of chocolate and baked berry. Drink through 2018.

A blend of 65% malbec, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petit verdot and 1% tannat; aged for 20 months in new French oak: Saturated bright medium ruby. Very ripe, high-toned aromas of black raspberry and sweet mocha oak. Sweet blackberry and blackberry fruit flavors are complicated by coffee and mocha notes and given a light touch by nicely integrated ripe acidity. Finishes with brisk berry flavors and good lift. A bit withdrawn today, in need of a couple years in bottle to absorb some more of its oak.

From a fabulous vintage in Agrelo look for a floral, plum jam, barnyard, spicy, black berry, vanilla nose with savoury liquorice tobacco notes. The palate is rich and dry with fine acidity and some grainy young tannin. More liquorice, black plum, pepper, blueberry, spicy, vanilla, coffee flavours flecked with poultry spice. A bit rustic but with fine concentration and intensity with youthful tannins to shed over the next 2-4 years. Roast beef anyone.

12 Exciting Argentinean Wines: The 2009 Amano – Remolinos Vineyard is a blend of 60% Malbec, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Tannat aged entirely in new French oak for 20 months. It offers a very ripe, voluminous bouquet of mulberry, blackberry and melted tar with subtle undergrowth aromas. The palate is very well-balanced with juicy ripe red berry fruit laced with white pepper, orange rind and a touch of marmalade. It builds nicely to a ravishing yet fresh finish that has great persistency. If you are wondering, then the answer is -yes-: the 2009 Amano justifies the price tag. Drink now-2020.

A blend of 60% malbec, 31% cabernet sauvignon, 6% petit verdot and 3% tannat: Bright, deep ruby. Cassis, minerals, mocha and milk chocolate on the nose, plus a whiff of exotic coconut. Suave and silky in the mouth, with lush, sweet flavors of cassis, menthol, fresh herbs and fruity dark chocolate. An impressively pliant blend, finishing broad and long, with nicely refined tannins coating the palate. Very well made, but I’d give it a year or two in the cellar before pulling the cork.
