GOLD LIST: 2015 The Owl & The Dust Devil, Remolinos Vineyard

“A ‘full-bodied and fresh’ addition to the Gold List, began an impressed Mattia Scarpazza of Petersham Nurseries, going on to describe ‘sweet baked notes of spiced black cherry and raspberry’. Carolina Seibel of Portland Restaurant noted signs of ‘development, with red and dark fruits, some leafy and orange peel notes on the nose, leading to candied lingonberry fruit with very fine, intense tannins’. Enamoured of its ‘complex layers of cigar box, tobacco and earthy notes’, Sahar Gharai of La Dolce Vita Wine Lounge (California) saw this as a perfect match for grilled entrecôte.  Gold List, Sommelier Wine Awards 2018”

GOLD LIST: 2013 Decero Mini Ediciones Petit Verdot

This Petit Verdot took home a well-deserved Gold medal with what Gymkhana’s Valentin Radosav described as ‘a nose of blackberry and gamey notes, leading to a charcoal-granitic minerality on the palate with ripe, dark fruit at the core, along with espresso and chocolate notes, and well-balanced tannins’, with team leader Annette Scarfe MW highlighting its ‘more rustic style, packed with dark bramble fruit, fresh acidity and big but ripe tannins’.

2015 The Owl & The Dust Devil, Remolinos Vineyard

This is 6 stars, 5 is usually our max, but this is some GOOD STUFF. This is the perfect wine for us, great taste for you and a technical app for me!

93 Points: 2015 The Owl & The Dust Devil, Remolinos Vineyard

90 Points: 2016 Decero Malbec, Remolinos Vineyard

A sanguine red, with notes of hot stone to the raspberry, dried cherry and floral flavors. The savory finish has some minerally accents. 90 Points

93 Points: 2015 The Owl & The Dust Devil, Remolinos Vineyard

Finca Decero’s evocatively named cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and a little Tannat is now into its second edition. The Petit Verdot provides lots of structure here, giving backbone to the sweet, succulent dark berry fruit. Fresh acidity cleans the palate and lengthens the finish. 2019-25. 93 Points

92 Points: 2015 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

Finca Decero is making increasingly refined wines under Tommy Hughes. This Alto Agrelo Cabernet, produced from vines close to the road to Chile, sees 20% new oak and a typically fresh, polished red, showing scented cinnamon spice and fine cassis fruit. 2019-25. 92 Points

92 Points: 2016 Decero Malbec, Remolinos Vineyard

Finca Decero’s vineyards in Alto Agrelo produce grapes with more freshness (and lower pHs) than the lower part of the sub-region and it’s apparent here on this elegant, refined, refreshing Malbec. The 20% new oak is stylishly done. 2020-26. 92 Points

91 Points: 2016 Decero Mini Ediciones Cabernet Franc, Remolinos Vineyard

Released under the “mini ediciones” label, as there are only 1,600 to go round, this deeply coloured, sumptuously oaked Cabernet Franc isn’t overburdened with varietal character, but is well made and stylish with plush cassis and bramble fruit. 2020-26. 91 Points

91 Points: 2015 The Owl & The Dust Devil, Remolinos Vineyard

This starts off all floral charm, but in the finish there’s some serious structure and in between there’s a lot of pleasure to be gained from this well-balanced blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, petit verdot and tannat. Drink or hold. 91 Points

90 Points: 2016 Decero Malbec, Remolinos Vineyard

A relatively subtle nose in spite of the ripeness. Moderately rich, with a long, quite dry finish that makes it feel a little less powerful than it really is. 90 Points

90 Points: 2016 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Remolinos Vineyard

A very nice cabernet for the difficult 2016 vintage with dried cherry, currants and toast aromas. Medium body, but with generous, supple tannins and some richness on the finish. 90 points

90 Points: 2016 Decero Mini Ediciones Cabernet Franc, Remolinos Vineyard

From the red berry and herbal aromas, which follow through to the rather dry palate, you could almost mistake this for a red Bordeaux, but the finish is slightly too silky for that. 90 Points

94 Points: 2014 Decero Amano, Remolinos Vineyard

The flagship cuvée is the 2014 Amano, comprised of 66% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot and Tannat, all from the Remolinos Vineyard and aged in new French oak. It has classic Malbec blue fruits as well as terrific minerality, notes of violets and peppery herbs, full-bodied richness, and a pure, elegant, incredibly balanced profile. This tour de force in Argentina Malbec should be snatched up by readers. It can be drunk today or cellaring for 7-8 years. 94 Points

92 Points: 2015 The Owl & The Dust Devil, Remolinos Vineyard

The 2015 Owl & the Dust Devil is a blend of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Malbec, 19% Petit Verdot and the rest Tannat that saw 18 months in 40% new French oak. This medium to full-bodied, elegant blend gives up plenty of black and blue fruits, violets/spring flowers, and a hint of menthol. It has outstanding purity of fruit, moderate tannin, and is already drinking great. 92 Points
